NILES – South Riverfront Park and will come to life – historical life – Saturday, Oct. 25 and Sunday, Oct. 26, with the Fort St. Joseph Living History Fair.
Professional re-enactors will take the fort back to the mid-1700's with tailored presentations, demonstrations, baked goods and music.
The event is made possible by the non-profit organization Support the Fort Inc. The fair kicked off on Friday with a special day reserved for third and fourth grade students.
Different stations were set up for the students to tour. Each station incorporates the event's main theme into their presentations. This year's theme is corn. The different stations included a trading post where merchants barter for goods and animal pelts.
Native Americans and Jesuits and the interaction between the two will be portrayed as well as the culture of the Potowatomi.
Re-enactors will be clad in French and British military uniform, demonstrating medical care procedures, arms display and marching drills.
And there will be plenty more. The event is open free to the public and will give visitors a chance to view the history that took place here in Niles so many years ago.
The site will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
