Just in time for the change in seasons, when getting outside to get some exercise might be a little harder to do, a new business in town is gearing up to get people moving.
It is a franchise for exercise and it’s an exercise with a combination of new moves.
Beverly Manuel recently celebrated the grand opening of her new business, Niles’ own “Jazzercise” location at 1011 Broadway Street on the lower level.
Jazzercise has been gaining ground and followers for some time now, even endorsed by Cheryl Burke of television’s “Dancing with the Stars.”
Manuel describes Jazzercise as “a dance fitness program that incorporates dance, yoga, pilates, cardio, kickboxing…”
The combination reportedly burns a significant number of calories in a 30 or 60 minute class.
“I got started in Jazzercise about 10 years ago,” Manuel said. At the time, she’d just moved to the South Bend area from Tennessee.
“After the first class, I was hooked. I was very impressed. I love the moves.”
She loved it so much she began teaching the exercise, going through the franchise” teaching workshop and has been teaching ever since, for the past five years, starting in Mishawaka, Ind. and then at the Lakeland Athletic Club in Niles.
When the time was right for Manuel to branch out on her own, she said she made the call to Lisa Croteau over at Niles Main Street and began looking over available locations, “looking for the perfect sized room, and the perfect fit for Jazzercise.”
That perfect fit was on Broadway with an open space for what is a client base of 20 so far, taking one of her five classes offered each week.
Manuel teaches two morning classes on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. and two evening classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. and a Saturday morning class at 8:30 a.m.
What does one need to do to get started?
“Just walk through the door,” Manuel said.
The instructor encourages those interested in trying Jazzercise to stop in and try out the class “and see if it’s something they really like.
“If you have two left feet,” she said. “You can do it.”
The program boasts various levels of intensity, Manuel teaches both high and medium intensity sessions.
“I make everyone feel welcome,” she said, adding that the program is good for people of all ages and very easy to follow.
“The more you come, the more you catch on.”
For more information on the program, those interested can go to www.jazzercise.com and click on ‘find a class.’ Or, Manuel said, they can call for information by calling (574) 271-9754.
