Beautiful weather and a large crowd made for a successful fundraiser on Sunday, July 26, when the 5th Annual Bruno’s Remembrance Ride took place. More than 140 motorcycles hit the streets, escorted by the Berrien Country Sheriff Department to raise another $6,000 for the Bruce Czech Scholarship Fund. They returned to the Moose Lodge in Benton Harbor to join with 200 additional supporters for a fantastic meal and entertainment throughout the afternoon, including a special recognition for local businesses who served as major sponsors for the scholarship fun, which serves students attending Lake Michigan College. With this year’s funds included, the Bruno’s Remembrance Ride has raised a total of $32,000 in just five years!
The ride is the sole event to raise money for the fund, named after the late Bruce “Bruno” Zech, who was killed in 2005 in an excavating accident. “He was always giving to others, and he especially wanted to help kids,” said Mrs. Patty Zech, organizer of the event. Mr. Zech never had a formal education, beginning work just after high school in the excavation trade and working his way up to finally become part owner of B&Z Co. in Benton Harbor.
The ride was conceived by Zech’s extended family and friends shortly after Bruno’s death in 2005, as a way to honor his memory in a way that contributes to the community. “I’m so grateful to the community and our family and friends for continuing to support our local students.” Stated Patty Zech, upon totaling this year’s donations. “Every participant has my deepest gratitude for carrying on Bruno’s desire to help others.”
The ultimate goal of the ride is to improve the community overall by investing in education, one student at a time. Special guests this year included four recent recipients of scholarships, who volunteered at the ride and spoke about their gratitude and plans for a bright future.
“It was a pleasure to host the scholarship recipients this year, and we appreciated their help,” said David Boal, one of the organizers. “They had a great time and we hope to have them back next year, along with other recipients.”
What about next year? Ideas are already in the works to keep each year fresh and exciting. Mrs. Zech stated, “People are already asking me about next year – I think it will be fun to see how long we can keep the ride going. As long as there are people willing to come out and have a good time, and raise money for a great cause, there will be the Bruno’s Remembrance Ride. Come out next year and join the fun!”
