CASSOPOLIS – A Niles man who victimized kids by downloading child pornography from the Internet will spend a year in the Cass County Jail and the next five years on probation.
Raymond Hulben, 43, received the sentence Friday morning in Cass County Circuit Court on three counts of child sexually abusive material possession at his home at 834 Leet Rd. on June 17.
Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz said he was “appalled” by the look on the face of a young 6-year-old girl whom he said will likely have serious psychological problems from this activity that will affect the girl possibly her whole life.
A jury during Hulben’s trial reviewed this material.
“They viewed graphic materials,” Judge Michael Dodge noted.
Fitz continued that Hulben was deep into pornography.
“He didn’t care that he had it or was using it,” he said. “Obviously he gets sexual pleasure watching these acts. When he downloaded it, it was the child porn industry that is money driven. He was part of that market. It was evil. The kids at 5 and 6 years of age, and unless you see it, you don’t see the fear on the children’s faces. They will never be the same.”
Fitz said based on Hulben’s long-term possession of it, he should be sentenced at the top of his guideline range at 17 months.
Defense attorney James Miller said he has the support of his family, co-workers and employer.
Dodge said Hulben has no prior record but noted the materials found were depraved and disgusting.
“It just provides a market to exploit children,” Dodge said. “I was appalled. I had to watch what adults subjected those kids to. You can’t erase it from your mind. It’s horrifying.”
He was given credit for 157 days served and ordered to pay $3,464 costs.
And in 17 months or less he’ll be free to download more porn once again. How sad!
