SMC markets IT program to students
Published 11:08am Wednesday, March 17, 2010Seven out of the top 50 in-demand occupations are in the field of information technology, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Computer-oriented jobs are among the fastest growing careers in the tri-county area and are forecast to increase in the next six years.
The marketability of information technology careers provided Southwestern Michigan College the opportunity recently to host its first Information Technology Day to area high school students.
“We had almost 200 high school students from Michigan and Indiana who attended our IT Day,” said Stacy Horner, chairwoman of SMC’s School of Business. “The day not only gave students the opportunity to learn about careers in information technology and meet our faculty as well as Ferris State University’s faculty, it allowed SMC to showcase our great facilities and programs.”
Horner presented information on IT Day to SMC’s Board of Trustees during its March 9 meeting.
SMC collaborated with Ferris State University on IT Day. Ferris offers two bachelor of science degrees in information technology on SMC’s campuses: computer information technology and computer information systems.
