Published 10:39pm Tuesday, July 13, 2010Spotlight Agency of the Week
Are you a kid at heart who likes to play with trains? Do you enjoy nature, history, and the art of miniature landscaping and scale building designed with an all-natural materials? Then Fernwood needs you and your actual kid to volunteer as train monitors for its G- scale Railway Garden. You can answer visitors’ questions and monitor the trains. It is suggested that children who want to volunteer be at least 9 years old and you are prepared to properly supervise them at all times. So bring a grandkid, bring your mentee, bring a friend and run the trains! P.S. individual volunteers welcome too.
Adults
• Did you know that when you drive you can help older adults stay healthier in their own homes? North Berrien Senior Center as part of Senior Nutrition Services wants you to deliver noon time meals to homebound seniors in North Berrien County. Mileage reimbursement may be available. The meal routes run 10:30 a.m. through 1 p.m. and you can choose what days you volunteer.
• Join the 2010 All Crafts Fair Sept. 4 and 5, sponsored by the South Haven Area Chamber of Commerce. As a volunteer you will pitch in and help with set up, overseeing cleanliness during the event and assist with clean up.
• Cass County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) trains volunteer advocates to speak for the best interests of children who are brought before the court for reasons of abuse or neglect. Volunteers must be at least 21 years old and pass a criminal background check. Days and times you would volunteer vary; however, a court report and appearance must be conducted at least every 91 days.

• First Tee, co-located with the Boys and Girls Club of Benton Harbor, provides local youth with activities that promote character development and life enhancing values through the game of golf. This summer more than 150 kids are registered and additional volunteers who like kids and golf are invited to join the action. Golf experience is helpful but not necessary since the program teaches life skills through the game of golf.
• The Van Buren Department of Human Services assists children, families and vulnerable adults to be safe, stable and self-supporting. You can help the office run more smoothly when you assist with filing, copying, sorting as well as updating manuals. You can also help with office mail and greeting customers. This is a great opportunity to use your office skills or build new ones. If you prefer you could also help in the children’s corner supervising youth while their parents meet with workers. This includes engaging children in simple games, crafts, storytelling and other activities. If you speak Spanish that is a plus. Both positions are Monday through Friday during regular business hours.
