Cass County to give away backpacks, school supplies
Published 5:09pm Friday, August 6, 2010Lewis Cass Intermediate School District and the Backpack Club of Cass County will be hosting its 3rd Annual School Supply Spectacular.
Community businesses, foundations and individuals have pulled together in order to make sure that more local children have the proper supplies to start the school year out right.
If you are or have a student in Cass County, and if providing a backpack and school supplies would be a hardship on your family, you are welcome to attend.
The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 14 at Lewis Cass I.S.D. Brookside Learning Center, 61682 Dailey Rd., Cassopolis. The doors open at 9 a.m. They will have at least 1,500 stuffed backpacks to give away this year. They will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The supplies are for students in grade preschool through high school. In addition to giving away supplies, they will have seven volunteer hairstylists on hand to give basic haircuts, the Cass/VanBuren Health Department will perform dental checks and Tri-County Head Start will teach bus safety and share information about its preschool program. Dowagiac and Cassopolis libraries will also be there to sign up new library cards so be sure to bring your I.D.
This event is possible due to the financial support received from United Way of Southwest Michigan, Midwest Energy Co-op, Cass County Youth Council, St. Denys Foundation, McLoughlin Family Foundation, Pamida Foundation, Ed Lowe Foundation, Michigan Gateway Community Foundation, Creative Vinyl, Fiala and Smith, Stephenson Land Surveying, Bender Electric, Indiana Michigan Power, Pleasant View Church of Christ, Penn Friends Church, Hope United Methodist Church and many individuals and businesses.
