Landfill hearing needed
Published 8:02pm Thursday, August 12, 2010Dear editor:
I am writing this letter to voice my concerns about the way the Southeast Berrien County Landfill Authority has gone about voting to sell the landfill. I live in Niles Charter Township and there has been no public hearing by the township for the citizens to voice their opinion. For that matter, there has been no vote by the township board to sell the landfill. How can one of the owners of said landfill not even have democratic process on such a huge decision?
There is a website where people can go to find more information on this important subject. It is www.savethesebclandfill.webs.com. It even has an online petition you can sign.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth D. Bujak

So much for the liability reason – so now it comes down to the money again. They want their fair share of OUR money. Selling is easier than raising taxes right?
Don’t we also own an non-profit ambulance service too? They write off a half a million dollars each year – sounds like a big liability to me. Heck, they even make us pay a special assessment! Okay, let’s sell it!!!! How about some the neighborhood parks. All they have are swings and slides. We can sell the land AND get property taxes when someone builds a house on it.
My concern is that there are a few on the Landfill Board that can’t see past the dollar signs. I’m confident that little research done by the all of the board members. In fact, I’m not sure that some of them could do nor understand the impact of their decision to sell. For the most part, it seems like much of this recent discussion to sell took place while Mullendore was leading this charge. I think we need to step back and re-evaluate who is on this board and get some capable and qualified folks that understand the ramifications of this issue and present them to the public for discussion before deciding on an issue that will affect so many people.
