Troopers from the Michigan State Police Niles Post solved a series of vehicle thefts and break-ins of garages in south Niles Township July 28 with the arrest of a suspect.

Numerous vehicles were entered and other items were stolen the evening of July 28. During the investigation of one break-in, Trooper John Moore lifted fingerprints that were identified by the Michigan State Police Grand Lab as belonging to Treg Huss, 17, of Niles. According to the state police, the fingerprints were processed through the Automated Fingerprint Identification System and lab personnel positively matched them.

The suspect was arrested Tuesday for felony and misdemeanor charges associated with the break-ins.

“The diligence of the troopers properly processing the crime scene was the key component in solving these larcenies,” F/Lt. Michael Brown said. The troopers at the Niles Post take pride in their crime scene investigation, and on this case, a suspect was identified because of their efforts, the post stated in a release.

Huss was assigned in the 5th District Court on charges.
