Michiana Hematology Oncology has announced that Dr. Robin Zon began seeing patients at its Niles cancer center beginning Wednesday.

Zon — who joined Michiana Hematology Oncology in 1998 and is the only female oncologist in Michiana — will provide medical oncology services at the Niles cancer center as part of an overall expansion of cancer care services to the greater southwest Michigan region.

Michiana Hematology Oncology’s Niles cancer center features five board-certified oncologists and four nurse practitioners, and provides comprehensive medical oncology, radiation oncology, gynecologic oncology and adult hematology services for all types of cancer.

Zon, a research chemist by profession, returned to school to earn her medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. After completing her residency at St. Vincent Hospital and Health Care Center in Indianapolis, she served a fellowship in medical oncology and hematology at Indiana University. In June 2010, Zon was elected to serve a three-year term as a board of director community representative for the prestigious American Society of Clinical Oncology, an international membership organization that includes more than 27,000 oncology professionals. Zon also serves as principal investigator for the Northern Indiana Cancer Research Consortium — a non-profit organization that conducts more cancer research than anyone else in northern Indiana, she is past vice chairwoman of the Hoosier Oncology Group and serves as National and local community co-chairwoman of several co-operative group research trials. Zon is also well published and recognized for promoting exemplary standards and practice of clinical research in both national and international venues.

Michiana Hematology Oncology, P.C., established in 1968, is the region’s largest oncology group providing medical oncology, radiation oncology, gynecologic oncology and adult hematology services through six regional offices in north-central Indiana and southwestern lower Michigan. The physicians at Michiana Hematology Oncology conduct more cancer research through the Northern Indiana Cancer Research Consortium than any other medical practice in Indiana.
