Vincent D. Ivins, 95, of Clay Street in Niles, died at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 19, 2011 at Lakeland Community Hospital in Niles following a brief illness.

He was born Dec. 13, 1915 in South Bend, Ind. to Fred W. and Josephine D. (Grabarz) Ivins. He graduated from Niles High School in 1933 and has lived in Bertrand and Niles all of his life. He was employed by the National Standard Corp. for 39 years as an on-site supervisor of new manufacturing equipment at installations throughout the United States. He retired in 1981.

Vince was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 708 and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Niles, where he served as an usher. He was also a former member of the Niles Historical Society, and a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army. He enjoyed his home shop, both woodworking and machining; restoring an old Chevrolet; and repairing clocks by making new parts and repairing everything else that broke.

On June 29,1940 in the rectory of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, he married the former Isabelle I. Johnson, with whom he had celebrated 63 years of marriage before she preceded him in death Aug. 27, 2004. He was also preceded in death by a son, Robert M. Ivins on March 9, 1991; and two brothers, Leonard Ivins who died in a childhood accident, and Lt. Col. Hobart Ivins, United States Air Force, retired, who died in 2010.

Surviving family includes a son, Richard D. (Patricia) Ivins of Niles; grandchildren, Justin (Erika) Ivins and Nicholas Ivins; great-grandchildren, Hunter Ivins and Justin Ivins; and sisters, Irene Miller of South Bend, Ind. and Maryann Herzer of Fort Worth, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Vincent D. Ivins will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 23 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church by the Rev. David Otto, of the parish.

Committal rites will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, with recitation of the Rosary at 7:30 p.m.

Contributions in Memory of Vince may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
