Chemical waste collection offered in Buchanan

Don’t let used motor oil, old oil-based paint and other garage chemical waste freeze and thaw through the winter.
Bring household chemical waste to the final 2011 Berrien County sponsored Household Hazardous Waste Collection on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Southeast Berrien County Landfill Recycle Center, 3200 Chamberlain Rd., Buchanan.
Accepted items include oil-based paint, stain, varnish, mineral spirits, paint thinner, turpentine, used motor oil and filters, antifreeze, brake fluid, gasoline, waxes/polishes, home heating oil, lighter fluid, pesticides, lawn chemicals, aerosols, cleaners, muriatic acid, one-pound propane cylinders, photographic chemicals, thermometers, thermostats, liquid mercury, batteries, pool chemicals, beauty products, compact fluorescent light bulbs, 8-foot fluorescent tubes and shorter, unused medicine, medical sharps, cooking oil, driveway sealer, roof coating and other items.
County environmental specialist. These materials will be recycled or disposed properly by a licensed hazardous waste contractor.
Items that are not accepted include latex paint (can be dried out and placed with regular trash), ammunition, asbestos, 20-pound propane tanks (for gas grills), smoke detectors, tires, waste from businesses, and empty containers. Outlets for these materials may be found in the Berrien County
